Anthony Buonomo is the founder of Austin Historical Weapons Guild, Austin’s premier HEMA school. From its humble beginnings as a park meet up it has grown under his direction to a thriving organization which offers a variety of weekly classes along with beginner's introduction courses, regular workshops, and has recently expanded into virtual lessons. He has taught workshops and classes at multiple events and is has also been fortunate enough to travel and provide weekend seminars for other HEMA schools.

Most recent accolades include a Bronze in Rapier at Gesellen Fechten in 2021, a Gold in Single Stick at CombatCon 2021, as well as various Sword and Buckler and Longsword medals from the "before times". He is featured in multiple Modern Rogue videos online, and strives to be a HEMA ambassador for their viewers.

Managing Timing through Distance

Learning to manage distance and timing is one of those vague ideas that everyone knows they should do, but don't really know where to start. What makes it worse, is that there are not many historical resources out there that cover these concepts explicitly. In this class, we will explore what ideas there are presented in historical sources, and how we can apply them to our own fencing no matter the weapon system. After a general overview of distance in fencing, we will narrow in to analyze longsword plays utilizing various distances to better understand how these changes affect our ability to respond to an opponent.

Introduction to Thibault's Rapier

Would you like to learn to fence rapier standing upright, and actually be encouraged to hit the other fencer's blade? Come learn the simple beauty of the Posture of the Straight Line with Thibault. While similar to Destreza in appearance, the fencing style of Gérard Thibault d'Anvers is a style in its own right. This is the rapier you've always wanted to do, especially if you have longsword experience. Whether you've fenced for years or it's the first time you're picking up a sword, Thibault's style and methodology will offer insight into fencing as a whole, and make you the rapier fencer everyone complains about.
