Brian Stokes - SoCal Swordfight 2022 Instructor

Brian Stokes, the founder of the Schola San Marco, started his career in the sword in 1973 with Olympic fencing and then changed to training in Japanese traditions in 1977, joining the Suio Ryu(r) in 2002 in which he still participates on an almost daily basis. 

In 2001 he began his studies of Fiore dei Liberi and this was joined in 2016 by the rapier work of Gerard Thibault.  Brian also has one of the largest private collections of original fencing books consisting of 40 works, including Marozzo, Alfieri, Agrippa, Thibault, Angelo.

Suio Ryu(r) Naginata

An introduction into the naginata of the Suio Ryu(r), one of the oldest extent battlefield traditions in Japan. Those who are interested in polearms might find this class particularly interesting in that many of the movements seen in some of the WMA treatises are found in naginata.

Fiore's Guards

A class presented to update some of the guards found in Fiore's manuscripts, from abrazare to the two-handed sword.

A rondel, a one-handed sword, and a two-handed sword.

An Introduction to Thibault's Rapier

This is an introduction into the rapier system of Gerard Thibault (1628). Drawing from the most lavishly printed fencing book participants will gain insight into what differentiates Thibault's rapier from that of the Italian, French, and Spanish traditions.

Rapier and a mask.
