About Derek Gill

Derek has been practicing HEMA since the summer of 2018. He is a student at SoCal Swords and is the founder of the Czort Fencing study group which focuses on study and exploration of healthy movement, posture, and structure in both historical and sporting applications of fencing. Using his background in medicine and clinical research, he works to debunk exercise myths and provide an understanding good movements with the goal of making training more effective and less damaging to the body.
His current focus of studies includes:

- Polish saber in its varying contexts
- I.33 Sword and Buckler
- Rapier as instructed by Fabris and Alfieri
Classes Being Taught by Derek at SoCal Swordfight 2022
Pain is a Punishment, Not a Teacher. A Look at Building and Maintaining Healthy Joints and Posture in and out of HEMA.
This class will take a look at many of the sources of pain in HEMA and different ways to address it. Postural and movement based sources of pain will be explored as well as solutions to help manage and even prevent it. Healthy movement of the body as well as conditioning techniques to improve alignment, strength, and coordination will be taught with the end goal of reducing wear and tear of the joints while improving the quality of body movement and structure.
Required Gear
A long sword is ideal, but one handed swords will work as well.
