About Josh Furrate
Josh Furrate has been playing with swords in earnest since early 2016 and he hasn’t stopped. In fact, he has simply pursued more methods of sword fighting whether it’s longsword (clothing optional), smallsword, Meyer's Rappier, Messer, Sword & Buckler, or cutting you can be sure that Josh has done it, seen it, and has insight on it. He brings this vibrant enthusiasm to all he does, but it shines brightest when he is teaching. He has also been instrumental in facilitating the Baton Rouge Open (BRO) which is a two day sword event promoting various weapon events.
In addition to teaching at the sword club, Josh has been an instructor at Schwertkampf Mexico 2019, PHO 2019, IGX 2019, SoCal 2020 where he shared his extensive knowledge of longsword. Though instructing is a heavy focus, he is no stranger to competition and in 2018 it showed. He won silver for longsword at Schwertkampf Mexico 2018, gold for longsword at the Victoria Highland Games 2018, silver for cutting at Valley of the Sun cutting competition, silver at Gesellen Fechten 2021, and perhaps the most important is his Honorable Conduct award at Icebreaker 2019.
While Josh is known for his southern charm and propensity for sparring at the drop of a hat, what he is perhaps most known for is his great, big heart. You will be hard pressed to find a more generous guy, but keep it in mind that no matter how sweet his smile, he will fight tooth and nail in the ring.
Classes Being Taught by Josh at SoCal Swordfight 2022
To Zorn or to Krump? That is the question.
The sources give us various responses to our opponent striking as us and some are a bit better defined such as the Zwerchhau. Yet the Zorn and Krump are both utilized for the same action. Do you Zorn him and stab to the face? Do you Krump to the hands or blade? Which one is it? This class will focus on deciding which action is best for the oncoming strike and for those moments that you couldn't decide in time.
Mask Gloves Gorget Longword simulator (Steel preferred but not required) Jacket is optional.

This class is focused on longsword sparring drills/games to work on finding your measure and applications of footwork associated with it. This class will also explore understanding what actions to do from the onset and once you've entered the Krieg.
