Historical European Martial Arts Longsword Cutting Tournaments at SoCal Swordfight

It's not just combat tournaments, we also want to see how your skills with an extremely sharp sword!

SoCal Swordfight 2023 will feature 3 tiers of competition for cutting with a longsword. Each of these tournaments is tailored to unique skill and experience levels, so you can feel confidant to choose the one that is right for you to participate in.

You are only allowed to participate in One Longsword Cutting Tournament, so please choose the one you feel is most appropriate for where you are in your HEMA journey.

Enter these tournaments to see if you can translates your hard won skills into actual cuts as you progress through a variety of challenges to see if you can cut it!

THESE ARE BRING YOUR OWN SWORD EVENTS.

Loaner swords typically are made available by sponsors, however at this time they are not guaranteed. More Information on loaner weapons will be announced as we move closer to the tournament date or it becomes available.

Please register each attendee individually when possible.

When Registering for SoCal Swordfight 2023, please be sure to choose the registration type that fits with the activities you are going to participate in at the event (See below for Details).

If you have selected Full Event Registration, you will be asked which tournaments you would like to participate in. Where applicable select the level that you want to compete at and press the "+add" button to place them in your cart for checkout.

You will have the opportunity to review your selection on the "Cart" page, if everything is correct, please select the "Check Out" button to proceed.

Next you will be asked to complete registration form for the person attending the event, name, contact info, club or school affiliation, and to sign the Release and Waiver of Liability Agreement.

If you are registering for a minor that you are a parent or legal guardian of, please fill out the registration with their name. The waiver will switch to asking for parental consent once you put in their date of birth. 

Once you have complete the registration form and signed the waiver, press the "Submit" and "Checkout" buttons to proceed to the payment form.

Once you have paid for your registration, you will receive an email receipt as well as an additional email to access your tickets electronically.

The goal of this rule set is to promote a style of fencing that is skillful, artful and martial. 

These are the rules for all tournaments regarding fighter conduct, safety standards, quality standards, target definitions, and timing.

This document provides the rules specific to the Cutting Tournaments at SoCal Swordfight.

All rules outlined in theGeneral Tournament Rules also apply to the Cutting Tournaments.

Rules are subject to change up to the commencement of the tournament.

Tournament participants must follow the directions of the tournament director and staff at all times. Any participant exhibiting behavior that places themselves or others at risk of harm will result in immediate disqualification and possible intervention by local law enforcement.

Safety Regulations

All competitors will be required to assume proper safe-handling procedures for sharp swords. This includes, but is not limited to, swinging the sword when there is the possibility of others in the vicinity, losing control of the weapon, or approaching the cutting area before being explicitly instructed to do so by the tournament staff. Should the tournament officials perceive that there is any safety issue, they retain the right to remove individuals from the cutting tournament or cutting qualifiers at their discretion.

Competitors in open tournaments are forbidden to cut toward their lead leg with Descending Cuts. Competitors in Advanced Cutting are free to cut in any direction.)

On a Serious Note

The biggest rule to our cutting tournaments are safety. Safety for yourself, those around you and our judges. Please keep this in mind with all that you do. 

You will be asked to perform a variety of cuts with a longsword on perhaps (or perhaps not) varied mediums. These cuts will depend on the level you are competing at, and will only be disclosed at the time (and perhaps at your turn) in the cutting tournament.

Tier Criteria
Beginner's Longsword Cutting

This is designed for competitors who have either not participated in a longsword cutting tournament before or who have not made it past the first round in a cutting tournament.

Tier Criteria
Advanced Longsword Cutting

If you've medaled in an open longsword cutting tournament, or habitually our among the finalist, you belong in our Advanced Cutting Competition.

Tier Criteria
Open Longsword Cutting

If you do not feel the Beginner's or Advanced tiers are right for your, then the Open Longsword Cutting Competition is right for you.
