Brian Stokes

Brian Stokes is the Maestro of the Schola San Marco where the arts of Fiore dei Liberi and Gerard Thibault are the focus of the schools studies. Brian started Olympic fencing in 1972 and subsequently participated in the Pan American foil trials. In 1977 he added studying the Japanese sword which he does to this day as a disciple of the Suio Ryu of Iak Kenpo, one of the oldest extent Koryus of Japan. To these studies the art of Gerard Thibault was added in 2016.

The Japanese Staff

Course Description:
The Suio Ryu is one of the oldest extant battlefield traditions in Japan, featuring the naginata, katana, wakizashi, kusarigama, and jo, amongst others. Founded at the end of the sengoku-jidai, this art is led by the 15th headmaster, Soke Katsuse Youshimitsu who for 80 years has striven to develop the art back to what it was 400 years ago. This class will delve into the usage of the jo staff of the Suio Ryu, which differs from the more modern arts in many ways. For those practicing the western staff this class might unlock some bits of knowledge or clarify that as seen in many of the Western texts as to how to manipulate the staff.

Introduction to Thibault's Rapier

Course Description:
An introduction to Thibault's rapier, covering his basic theories that are found in his book, 'The Academy of the Sword. For those who wish to square the circle this class will be provide a basis to the participants to begin their study of Thibault.

Rapier, Mask, Jacket, Gloves
