John Patterson

John Patterson is co-founder of the Phoenix Society of Historical Swordsmanship. John is an accomplished fencer with medals in longsword, saber, messer, singlestick, rapier, and sword & buckler (minus the buckler). He has also taught classes on different systems at numerous events nationally, and internationally.

For the last few years John has since taken a step back from the tournament scene to focus on developing the Phoenix Society into a suitable space for practicing the many forms of historical martial arts and PSHS members into effective fighters, fencers, competitors, and teachers.

At SoCal Swordfight 2023 John Patterson will be presenting the following:

Intro to Pugilism

Course Description:
Introduction to what pugilism and a brief overview of stance, movement, strikes and blocks. We will be primarily focusing on the systems as laid by Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery

Required Gear:
Clothes you can move in.

Course Level:
Beginner Level

Course Format:
Hands-On

Measure and tempo for Any Weapon

Course Description:
We will discussed the concepts of Measure, tempo and how it applies to sparring. We will have several drills and games to practice these skills.

Required Gear:
Minimum of a mask but students are encouraged to bring full sparring kit and weapons.

Beginner Level
