At SoCal Swordfight 2023 Steaphen Fick will be presenting the following:

Viking Sword and Shield

Course Description:
There is no written documentation of the way that they used their sword and shield. However, I have been working on the use of the sword and shield for over 15 years. I have also used a Viking shield defending against a sharp sword (wearing maille and other safety equipment)

In this class we are going to learn how to use the sword with a grip that allows us to move the sword around the opponent, their sword and even their shield, while being able to use the quillons to give us some defense of the hand. We will also learn ways to rotate between the true edge and false edge as we are attacking and defending with our sword.

Required Gear:
Viking or Norman sword
Shield (center grip preferred but strapped will work)
gloves
mask
gorget

The Secret Language of Conflict

Course Description:
You can read a person's intention, but not their mind. Every time that your opponent moves they will have to adjust their balance and only have certain options of movement available. In this class we will learn how to read the opponent's body language and balance in the fight so that we can know where they are going before they go there. When you can read their body, they cannot surprise you. You are now leading the fight before they even move.

Regardless of the style you study, European or Asian, the body will move the same. I've taught this to Kung Fu, Karate, Boxing, and HEMA practitioner. If you study a martial art you can use this skill to know what is going to happen before the opponent does it.

Required Gear:
longsword or other cutting sword
notebook
pencil

Advanced Level

Course Format:
Hands-On

Dastardly Disarms

Course Description:
We will be learning different ways to take the opponents weapon away from them. When you do a disarm you can choose to dispose of their weapon, use their weapon on them, or even dispose of your own weapon. Either way, you will have a weapon and they will not.

Required Gear:
longsword or side sword
mask
gloves
