Ferd Terado is a Certified Professional Instructor [Guro] and is a direct student of Tuhon Tim Waid in the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali [PTK-SMF] Combat System. He is the Pacific Northwest representative of The Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Global Organization and is currently the Chief Instructor of his Kali group based in Eugene, OR. In addition to blade-fighting, Ferd also trains with modern firearms and in unarmed combat. He has been a guest instructor in several martial arts seminars and workshops and plans to travel more to conduct training to anyone, who genuinely wants to learn the true, authentic combat system of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali and continue to interface/collaborate with martial arts organizations/practitioners, be it FMA, HEMA or otherwise.

When he's not swinging blades, Ferd works as a full-time animator in the videogame industry; If you have played "Call Of Duty: Vanguard," "Jedi: Fallen Order," "The Last Of Us: Part 2," and "Death Stranding," "Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe," then you've seen his work. He's also worked on "Crisis On Infinite Earths" TV series. His martial arts training and experience have proved very valuable in his career.

Short Sword & Dagger Tactics

Course Description:
Students will learn the offense-based, close-quarters tactics of sword and dagger from the Filipino martial discipline of Kali and discover its similarities (and differences) with European and other cultural martial arts. There will be a brief lecture on history, strategies, striking mechanics and footwork, then the dynamic executions of the tactics. Guro Ferd has a well-known reputation for being a dynamic instructor balanced with good humor. This will be a very physically engaging and fun class.

Required Gear:
Training swords
- Lengths: minimum 27in., 35in. max.
- Synthetic/polymer or steel/aluminum.
- All must have blunted tips.
- Suitable for blade to blade contact drills and sparring.
- Rattan sticks may also be used (no heavy wood sticks).

Training knives/daggers
- Lengths: minimum 7in., 15in. max.
- Synthetic (rubber, polymer) or steel/aluminum.
- All must have blunted tips.

Minimum safety equipment
- Eye protection: goggles.
- Light protective gloves (fingerless gloves, mechanix gloves, lacrosse gloves, etc.).

Other
- Hydration (water, sports drink).
- workout towel.

Double Short Swords

Course Description:
A dual sword wielding warrior is intimidating to behold both on the battlefield and in the arena. Advantageous in single combat and especially useful when dealing with multiple opponents. Guro Ferd will teach a lively and intensive class on the combat tactics of double short swords; starting with fundamental striking mechanics, how to develop true ambidexterity and dynamic footwork. With emphasis on offensive tactics, we'll quickly progress to the more advanced long-range to close-quarter maneuvers that's sure to overwhelm your opponent(s) and entertain the crowd.

Required Gear:

- Lengths: minimum 27in., 35in. max.
- Synthetic/polymer or steel/aluminum. All must have blunted tips.

Combat spear/quarter staff

Course Description:
Guro Ferd taught his first combat spear class at SoCal Swordfight 2019 and will return to teach another exciting class on the subject at SoCal Swordfight 2023. Although the spear is used primarily for thrusting and throwing from long range, those familiar with Asian combat systems know there's a great deal of slashing and close-quarter attacks as well. Students experienced with long sword and montante will notice some interesting similarities. Expect to see lots of fast maneuvering and (controlled) contact drills.
This session will include a solo live-blade spear (flow) demonstration.

Required Gear:
Training spear/quarter staff
- Lengths: minimum 4ft., 6ft. max.
- Shafts made of light materials (wood, rattan, synthetic).
- Spearheads of blunted rubber, polymer or metal. No sharp tips.
- If you don't have a spearhead, just use the staff.

Minimum safety equipment
- Eye protection: goggles.
- Light protective gloves (fingerless gloves, mechanix gloves, lacrosse gloves, etc.).

Other
- Hydration (water, sports drink).
