Joseph Brassey has been training in Historical European Martial Arts since 2008 and Kunst Des Fechtens exclusively since 2015, and has competed in tournaments since 2011. In addition to this, Joe is an accomplished author with eight books published in the historical fantasy and high fantasy genres. He has traveled and fenced internationally, and with seventeen years of experience as a teacher and a fencer, brings an authors eye to his study of historical techniques and training methodologies. Joe is also the president and head instructor of Grit City HEMA in Tacoma Washington.

Grit City HEMA is a welcoming Historical European Martial Arts club in Tacoma, WA, focused on Johannes Liechtenauer’s Kunst des Fechtens—primarily longsword—with integrated Ringen (wrestling) and Messer. Training emphasizes core concepts and fundamentals followed by applied drilling and skill development, ensuring every session challenges both new and experienced fencers. First class is free with loaner gear provided; just bring comfortable workout clothes, a good attitude, and your pronouns so the space stays inclusive. Train hard, have fun, and grow with a supportive community.
